Indicative weight range for dogs and cats

This tool only shows the expected adult weight range for the species, size and breed provided, based on published breed standards. It does not calculate an individual "ideal weight": that depends on the body condition score, assessed by a veterinarian during a physical exam.

How the range is obtained

For breeds with a published standard, we use the adult weight range from the standard itself. For mixed-breed dogs, we use the size classification: Small 2–9 kg · Medium 10–22 kg · Large 23–40 kg · Giant 41–80 kg. No statistical calculation is involved: it is a lookup in a fixed table built into this page.

Formula and sources

  • • FCI/CBKC and AKC breed standards — adult weight ranges by breed.
  • • Usual size classification in small-animal veterinary medicine (small up to 9 kg, medium 10–22 kg, large 23–40 kg, giant over 40 kg).
  • • WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee — 9-point Body Condition Score (BCS): body condition assessment is clinical, performed by a veterinarian.

Important: Weight alone does not define body condition: body condition score (BCS) assessment and any feeding plan are performed by the veterinarian. This result is an educational estimate, not a diagnosis or prescription, and does not replace a consultation with a veterinarian.
